I can’t remember when my interest in history fully bloomed, but it was when I was young. My first obsession was with the Titanic, thanks to my dad who had many books on the subject laying around just waiting for me to read. I remember from that moment on being more attentive to things around me and its continued to pay off, there is so much that I know now that will be very beneficial in the future.
My bigger influence came in elementary school when we learnt Jay County History; everything we were taught was interesting enough to allow me to remember it. Since then I’ve been interested more in local history more than anything, but I do branch out on many things, such as the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, or the ruins that are Six Flags New Orleans. There is a chance that if something is not presently know, give me 5 minutes and it will be! I’ve got so many resources at hand to make that possible.
I’m the type of guy to do all this research and have absolutely nobody to share it with, but with this blog, that will change. I’m not a great writer so some of it might be messy, but I will do my best! I’ve become very involved with the Jay County Historical Society, first as a volunteer, and next as a board member, and to have the resources needed to do even more local research, the time to start a blog is now. I had not planned on it, but I was thinking about it; and a conversation with my friend Ted, whose blog “Hiding in Plain Sight” has been a daily read, made me realize there is no time quite like the present.
The schedule for this blog will most likely be Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7am. The topics will be vast but the majority will be about things that I’ve grown fascinated with such as abandoned buildings, hermit crabs (which in this context is businesses operating out of former businesses, like the term “Used to be a Pizza Hut”) or things that were planned but never happened. I’ll focus on things of the past but I’ll also sprinkle in some current happenings here and there. The focus of this blog will be the state of Indiana in general but you’ll notice that posts will frequent the Northeastern part of the state. Thank you for reading and coming along for the ride, enjoy!
